Performers

At the dawn of the 21st-century, just as the internet began infecting every aspect of our daily lives, Toronto musicians Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning began building a social network of their own. Since debuting in 2001, Broken Social Scene have personified the unyielding, incomparable power of IRL human connection.

In both sound and personnel, Broken Social Scene has changed a lot since their 2001 inception. But one thing has remained constant—at the end of every show, Kevin Drew bids the crowd adieu by telling everyone to “enjoy your lives.” More than just a simple farewell, those words are a call to action—to put down your goddamn phone, get outside, and be part of a social scene of your own.

“You can spend your entire life chasing hits, but then when you’re your truest self, people really come out to support you,” says Kevin Comeau of the powerhouse Canadian duo Crown Lands. “When you just let you be you and let your freak flag fly, all of a sudden you get the biggest fan response, the biggest press, people coming out of the woodwork saying ‘This is the kind of music I love!’"

In the spring, Crown Lands—Comeau (guitar, bass and keys) and Cody Bowles (vocals and drums)—broke through with two songs that returned them to their prog-rock roots and pointed the way to a limitless future. Most recently, Crown Lands received their first Juno Awards nominations, for Rock Album of the Year and Breakthrough Group of the Year, taking home the award for Breakthrough Group.

With each new release, Crown Lands continues to come more fully into its own. “I love that we get to be the band making technically proficient music that still has a strong sense of melody,” says Comeau. “We’re finally making the music that we want to hear.”

South Africa is 12,075 kilometers away from Neon Dreams’ hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia, so when Frank Kadillac and Adrian Morris saw streaming numbers for their single “Life Without Fantasies” spike a year after its initial release, they were shocked to see that its life had been rejuvenated in a place they had never even visited before.

With the world being in lockdown for more than a year, Kadillac wasn’t sure if the shows would be awkward or even more energetic than usual. Fortunately, it was the latter. “It was like taking a shot of adrenaline to the heart. Every show was so loud from people yelling our lyrics back to us that it was hard for our sound guy to mix the show,” he recalls. “They showed us that our music really helped them through a hard time.”

The singer knows all about overcoming hardships—he endured abuse growing up, never stayed in one place long enough to make friends, and went to 10 different schools—but Kadillac persevered, and now uses music to help others find their way, too.

With a style perpetually galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty, sisters, Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay, come together to create Inuit style throat singing duo, PIQSIQ. Performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions, they leave their listeners enthralled with the infinity of possible answers to the question “what is the meaning of life.” With roots in Nunavut, the two grew up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

After years of forging hard won skill, they developed their own form blended with haunting melodies and otherworldly sounds. Approaching adulthood, they realized throat singing was not only a musical expression, but a radical, political act of cultural revitalization. As PIQSIQ, they have recorded four studio albums and perform improvisational looping live, creating a dynamic audience experience that changes with every show.
